Connecticut Junior Women, Inc., sponsors an annual State Spelling Bee for students in 5th & 6th grades in participating cities and towns.

The State Spelling Bee is representative of the goals of CJW in that it shows support for both public and private education. Local CJW clubs work with their Boards of Education, private educational systems and other educational organizations to assure the most productive and beneficial curriculum is obtained for all students. Spelling bees show the knowledge students acquire each day through their studies.

CJW clubs offer assistance in running school spelling bees, as well as the local city or town spelling bee. Students in 5th and 6th grade compete in classroom spelling bees, then in a school-wide spelling bee. Each school sends two winners and an alternate to the local spelling bee; two winners and an alternate represent cities and towns in the CJW State Spelling Bee. For the local bees, CJW clubs provide the word lists; contact word sayers, judges, and a Bee Master; and provide refreshments for the students and their families.

The CJW Spelling Bee is usually held in early April and is hosted by a CJW club and coordinated with the CJW Education Chair.
